2015 Thistle Great Lakes

Posted by on July 13, 2015

An impressive number of boats turned out for the GLCs at Edgewater YC in downtown Cleveland this past weekend. For many, it started with a nice practice sail in a dying sea breeze on Friday. Folks from Rochester, Newport, Detroit all hit the water. My team, with longtime crew/friends Jeff Eiber and Abby Freeman, went out to shake out our new DSD sails on a freshly tuned rig. Everything fit great, which is a testament to the hard work by our OD design and production team.

Saturday's racing was held in another dying sea breeze, which is a northerly in Cleveland. The first race was raced in 5-8 knots and the 2nd race was in 4-6 knots, but with some pesky motorboat chop which never seemed to end. Scores were tight at the top after the 2 races, with about 6-7 teams within reach for the two intended races on Sunday.

Sunday was not "Funday" as the wind quickly died from the South. PRO Jim Titgemeyer was fully intent on getting at least one race in and by shortening to the bottom mark, a 2-legged race decided the championship. Our team looked good as we drifted, but a zephyr filled from the South and propelled a small group, which included Mike Ingham's team.

Congrats to Steve White sailing 2-up with his wife Nora. Their decision to sail 2-up proved to be the right call as they were consistent in an otherwise inconsistent event. 2nd went to Kyle Finefrock's team with Jordan Gourash and Christine Rice. My team was 3rd.
