Bill Wiggins recaps Western Carolina Sailing Club’s annual spring centerboard regatta.
If the Eastern Redbuds are blooming, it’s time to head to Anderson, SC for the Annual Springboard Regatta. This spring opener acts as the Highlander Class Midwinter Championship.
This year’s event was met by a strong dip in the jet-stream, bringing chilly temps and a rainy practice day. A few of the northern teams setup early and hit the lake to knock the dust out of their rigs. Others made their way to the grand fireplace in the clubhouse for some camaraderie and warmth.
As teams arrived at the club on Saturday morning, they were met by a strong north breeze and bright sunshine. After a quick competitors meeting, the teams hit the lake.
The first race began in the Northeast Breeze which eventually shifted to the left and diminished to only 3 knots. The boats that sailed to the left side of the course took advantage of the shift and stayed in the breeze longer.
Races two through four were sailed in a bit more breeze (8-15) from the North-Northwest. These races always seemed to be a bit skewed at the top mark resulting in jibe sets for everyone. If you weren’t well versed in the jibe set, you certainly should be now.
Saturday evening, WCSC served up some “Southern Cookin” and we all enjoyed our meals to a great band.
Sunday morning brought a soft south wind. The early temps were recorded at 30ish degrees. Most teams piled on the gear and hit the lake.
In race five, all indications showed the left side of the course to have more wind and a favorable angle. However, the boats that were forced right early were shot out in front right away and won the race with huge dominance.
Congratulations to Tanner Schulz and his family team on their win!
This event was a prequel to the 2015 Highlander Nationals which will be held at WCSC in April. Visit www.sailhighlander.com if you are interested in participating in this event.
