Paul Abdullah recaps the 15' Thistle Midwinters East Regatta in St Pete.
The 60th Annual Thistle Midwinter's East regatta was held March 1st-6th, 2015 in St. Petersburg, FL. This year 43 boats attended, 10 more than last year due to the TCA getting the word out and creating a ground swell of excitement to bring the regatta back to where it was 10 years ago. Tom Hubble, the US Sailing President and long time Thistle sailor organized the Coach TCA program, a learning tool that puts experienced Thistle sailors with the less experienced to share knowledge of how to make the boat easier and more fun to sail!
Dieball customers did well winning five out of the six races on Wednesday and Thursday sailed in steady 8-12kt winds. Boat speed was the key to winning those races, and our D-Cut main has proven to be a clear winner. The CC Spinnaker worked great as we passed a lot of boats downwind too! The PRO actually came up to say the spinnaker looked best as he watched from the RC boat.
The awards banquet at the St. Petersburg YC was held Friday night after all the pre-partying took place. A special award was given to Paul and Carol Bardes for their service to the TCA Midwinter's East regatta running the event for over 10 years. Brett Freeman gave a hilarious speech for winning the B Fleet! He is a person this class needs because he likes to have fun and is going to attract a younger crowd which will guarantee the TCA to be successful in the future.
Mike Ingham took the honors for his consistent finishes throughout the regatta, avoiding the big number that plagued the rest of the top ten boats.
Next up is the Orange Peel Regatta and the 2nd half of the Southern Circuit in Jacksonville, FL March 20-22, 2015. Go to www.orangepeelregatta.com for more info.
