2010 Old Salty Thistle Regatta - Lake Norman, NC
Greg Griffin gives a glimpse as how he does it!
Dieball Sailing: Congrats, again! You are on fire. You seem to match good race course management with excellent boatspeed.
Greg Griffin: It has been a good year. We seem to have all the gears! As you know teamwork is important and throughout the summer I've had great crew to help me get the most out of 3976. For the Old Salty, I had Dave DeCamp and Lily Everson. They did a great job!
DS: Did you prepare for this event in Charlotte any differently?
GG: We sailed three up because of the forecast and I thought others would as well. We didn't go very big (445 lbs), so we had a good, versatile weight.
DS: Lake Norman can be tricky. How did you approach the racing?
GG: In all the races on Sunday - we played it safe up the middle and keeping the closest competition overall in check. All three races - someone would hit a corner and be launched. We were able to use our boat speed and some smarts and reel them in each time on the last beat to win all the races on Sunday. Courses were double W/L with a long beat to W to finish above the weather mark. We didn't panic and didn't chase what we couldn't get.
DS: What are your rig settings? You seem to have found a nice sweet spot.
I really like where the rig is as we seem to have all the gears and then some. The temp this weekend was a bit cooler and numbers were a little lighter at 10-12-3ish, but I decided to leave it where it was. We did not shim the front and we still had plenty of power and speed for the conditions (5-14).
DS: Thanks Greg and great sailing this fall!
