Video clinics: Tuning your J/24 beyond the Tuning Guide  -  Tips on Heavy Air J/24 Sailing

North Sails has been, for many years, offering two sail lines, the Newport and the San Diego. By combining the best designs of each line we came up with a simplified sail line that guarantees speed and power to your program. Here are the sail designs that we recommend:

Fat Head J/24 Mainsail

2016, 2015, 2014, 2013 Worlds winner!

The North Fat Head Mainsail may be the most successful J24 mainsail design, ever! The recent 2015 World Championship has shown, once again, no matter which North genoa best fits your sailing style, the FatHead main is the mainsail for top performance. The FatHead Main is designed for easy setup with one set mast butt position so whether you are in light or heavy air or flat or bumpy seas, you can be confident that the setup and tuning with your FatHead main will be correct. The hardest part about sailing with the FatHead Main is deciding which North genoa to pair it with to maximize your speed potential.

J/24 Mainsail standard features:

  • Tapered epoxy battens
  • Vision/spreader windows
  • Leech cord
  • Shelf foot
  • Floating tack
  • Cunningham
  • Leech telltales
  • Sail number and national letters
  • Class Insignia
  • One-design tube roll bag
  • Class Royalty

DX-7TT Newport Genoa

2014 & 2015 Worlds winner!

The DX-7TT was developed to work in concert with the Newport FatHead Main which required a deeper, more forgiving J/24 Genoa. The 2015 World Championship winning design is constructed using the revolutionary black Twaron (aka Kevlar) and black Technora. The DX-7TT J/24 Genoa has enjoyed success in many venues, from the big breeze and chop of Newport to flatter water lake sailing but this sail really shines when your team is in full hiking mode! The Kevlar/Technora fabric does a great job in helping the sail hold it’s designed shape in bigger breeze which really helps match, this proven all-around performing sail, to many sailing styles. It is especially great for sailors who prefer a genoa with a little finer entry with the potential for higher pointing.

  • J/24 Genoa standard features:
  • Three vision windows
  • Telltale window
  • Tacking line
  • Cunningham
  • Sail numbers
  • Draft stripes
  • Roll bag
  • One-design tube roll bag
  • Class Royalty

The DX-7-7 design is also available out of Pentex® material.

SD/TH J/24 Twaron/Technora Genoa

2016 Worlds winner!

The new and improved SD/TH Genoa is constructed from cloth that uses a blend of black Twaron (aka Kevlar) and black Technora. The Twaron is used in the load path for low stretch and the Technora is used off load for better durability especially with impact and flex that is inherent while tacking. The black coating in the cloth fibers helps protect reduce the damage that can be caused by the sun. The SD/TH also features lighter, reinforced patches and the foot round has been redesigned so less foot cord is needed thereby increasing durability. The exit of the sail is straighter to allow for tighter sheeting in moderate wind but with genoa leads forward it provides the power to punch through heavy chop. With a slightly fuller entry than the Newport DX-7TT this genoa is very forgiving to steer to in all conditions. The SD/TH performs exceptionally well in light to moderate wind conditions when a wide steering grove is needed. The SD/TH has won many regattas, including the 2013 Worlds and is a great choice for a fast, easy to trim sail that performs in all conditions.

Genoa standard features:

  • Three vision windows
  • Telltale window
  • Tacking line
  • Cunningham
  • Sail numbers
  • Draft stripes
  • Roll bag
  • One-design tube roll bag
  • Class Royalty

Super Rocket Blade + J/24 Jib

2013, 2014 & 2015 Worlds winner!

The new Super Rocket Blade + Jib features a tri-radial construction that makes it super low-stretch which is very important for a sail that will be used in 18-30 knots of wind. The design features a very straight exit which helps you to keep the boat flat. Ease the sheet 1/2" and the leech of this sail really opens up and de-powers! With the Super Rocket Blade Jib you will find the boat much easier to steer in the big breeze and heavy chop that this sail is designed for.

J/24 Jib standard features:

  • Vision window
  • Bronze hanks
  • One-design tube roll bag
  • Class Royalty

FR-2 J/24 Spinnaker

2016 & 2015 Worlds winner!

After many hours of on the water testing and computer studies by the North One Design designers, we are excited to have been able to offer a product that will made a significant difference how we race the J/24 especially on windward/leeward races. The FR-2 was based on and is a continuation of development of the successful SD spinnaker. Our testing showed that as we flattened the head the sail flies wider and the center seam is more upright improving projected area and speed. The bottom section has been refaired so the lower leeches fly more open underneath the middle of the sail. The objective was to make the sail fly more open up and down the luff. and the resulting shape allows the pole to be flown lower with more projection and a luff that breaks much more evenly along the entire height of the sail..

Newport Slant Nose+ J/24 Spinnaker

The, long popular, Newport Slant Nose+ spinnaker is still widely used by many competitive J24 teams. The enduring design, has many features that J24 sailors love. The sail is designed with extra stiff patches at the head and clews for maximum projection, tri-radial construction for durability and shape holding and is, arguably, the largest in the class in the lower one third of the sail making it a great all around performer especially when the breeze is up and the pole can be pulled aft.
